Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy administers several types of standardized tests to students.
Students in grades K-2 are administered the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Learning Skills (DIBELS). The DIBELS measures were specifically designed to assess 3 areas of early literacy: Phonological Awareness, Alphabetic Principle, and Fluency with Connected Text. All students are monitored 3 times a year. These measures monitor progress of all K-2 students and the data gathered is used to drive instruction. For more information, visit https://dibels.uoregon.edu/dibels_what.php
Students in grades 2-8 take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP®) twice a year -- once in the fall and again in the spring. Students are tested in Reading and Mathematics. The data collected is used to identify strengths and weaknesses in student achievement and to help shape instruction in the classroom. Parents receive reports after each testing session that contains detailed information regarding their student’s growth from one year to the next. For a parent guide to MAP® testing, click here. Should you have any questions regarding the MAP® tests, please contact Laura Hewitt at lhewitt@hbha.edu or Gayle Gray at ggray@hbha.edu.
Upper School students take college-bound exams. In grade 10, students take the PLAN® assessment that helps 10th graders build a solid foundation for future academic and career success and provides information needed to address HBHA’s high-priority issues. It is a comprehensive guidance resource that helps students measure their current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and post-graduation years.
The Preliminary SAT®/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) and is offered to students in 10th and 11th grade. It is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives students a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.
Students in grades 11 and 12 are offered the opportunity to take Advanced Placement courses. HBHA offers AP Calculus, AP English Literature, AP Government, AP History, and AP Statistics. AP exams are administered at the end of each course with the opportunity for students to receive college credit and advanced college placement. Students in these grades may also take the ACT and SAT. HBHA is a Sunday testing site for both of these exams.
