Upper School

HBHA offers a rigorous, college preparatory program in an environment that encourages personal and intellectual growth, a strong sense of community, and love of Judaism and Torah. In addition to academics, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and programs that enhance personal talents, strengths and sense of self, including athletics, student publications, academic competitions and student government.

Faculty members work with students as individuals in an effort to  foster maturity, define purpose and  establish the habit of life long learning. Classes are small, the pace is quick, the learning is intense and academics are strong.

ACT and SAT scores are well above national and state norms. Upper School students take a minimum of 30 credits of coursework, far exceeding Kansas state requirements. The dual curriculum provides the vehicle for introduction of heritage, history, values and Jewish identity. The college guidance program is individualized, and students are accepted into a wide range of colleges and universities.

In accordance with tikkun olam (improving the world in which we live), community service is required for students at each grade level, with over 40% of the student body completing 100+ hours of community service each year. Through student and faculty-generated grants, Holchim Yarok (an ecology leadership group) reaches out into the community, providing “going green” education and services, including recycling for the entire Jewish Community Center campus.

Relationships within the Upper School are characterized by a commitment to derech eretz (respect and decency). Faculty-student interaction promotes academic success and personal empowerment. Friendships are lasting, and ruach (spirit) abounds. In the HBHA Upper School, everyone can make a difference.
