HBHA News and Events
Report Cards
Report cards will be sent home with Lower School students and mailed to Middle and Upper School students this Friday. We hope you like the new format of the Lower School reports. We updated benchmarks to better parallel the curriculum and worked as grade level teams to prepare the reports. We would appreciate your feedback regarding the new report card format. Please send comments or questions to ggray@hbha.edu or call 913.327.8167.
Picture Retake Day
We are having another picture retake day on Monday, October, 26th at 8:30 a.m. The photographer will be here from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. that day. Lifetouch is only a pre-paid company. You must pay for your pictures prior to having your picture taken. You may pick up an envelope in the main office.
HBHA H1N1 Vaccination Site
As you may have heard, a new influenza virus, called the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, was first identified in the United States in late April 2009. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended that children and young adults aged 6 months through 24 years be vaccinated against 2009 H1N1 as soon as the vaccine is available.
Vaccination is the best way to protect your child from this potentially serious disease. The state and local health departments are working with HBHA to give the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine to children at school. HBHA has become a vaccination site. The Health Coordinator, Elisa Pener, will send you more information about the virus and the vaccine when we are assigned a date. You will also receive a form that will include options allowing you to either accept or refuse the vaccination for your child. If you refuse, the vaccination will not be given to your child. Children (5-9 years) are expected to need two doses of vaccine spaced about 3 weeks apart. There will be no cost to you for this vaccine if you choose our site for vaccinations.
In the meantime, if your child is sick, please keep them home to reduce exposure. Please remember to contact Nurse Pener and let her know your child’s symptoms.
Calling all HBHA Students!
If you are interested in participating in our Civic Service Award Dinner on May 2, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, please sign up with Pat Caldwell before October 23rd. Only 20 students in Grades 4-12 will be able to participate in this exciting evening. There will be two big production
numbers during the evening's program. Both will involve singing and dancing, and several rehearsals will be required. If you agree to be part of HBHA's most important fundraising event, it is necessary that you be at rehearsals. Please keep this in mind when signing up.
Your participation in the 2010 Civic Service Awards program really helps make the evening special. Your talent, energy and enthusiasm will help us have a strong and financially healthy 2010-2011 school year.
If you have more questions, please contact event coordinator Paul Lerner by email or at 913-649-0457, or development director Martha Atlas by email or at 913-327-8156.

HBHA going Pink for the Cure®
Because the need to end breast cancer is so urgent, pink is the color we'll wear to accomplish our goal! Participating is simple. Just wear pink and your favorite acceptable non-distressed jeans on October 23rd and make a donation of $5 or more to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the leader of the global breast cancer movement. If you'd like to contribute online, please use the link below. In return for your contribution, you'll get the satisfaction of helping to move us closer to a world free of breast cancer. Please contact Elisa Pener if you have any questions about our event. Thanks in advance for your help and for showing your true colors by going Pink for the Cure on 10.23.09!

HBHA Celebrates Red Ribbon Week
October 26-28
Each year Red Ribbon Week provides us with an opportunity to renew our commitment to a healthy and drug-free lifestyle and to show our dedication to education and prevention efforts in our school. The national weekly celebration, Red Ribbon Week, allows us to focus on the work being done to stop the spread of drugs and to draw attention to the growing millions who have pledged to live drug free. To help make this week effective and memorable our calendar of events for students and staff are as follows:
• Monday: All Academy students will be able to wear a red shirt in recognition of Red Ribbon Week
• Tuesday: Hugs not Drugs Day, lower school students are invited to bring in a new stuffed animal to be donated to Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics
• Wednesday: We all CAN say no to drugs. Students are encouraged to bring one can of food to be donated to Harvesters
Grandparent Volunteers
We are developing a list of grandparents who would like to volunteer at HBHA. You don't have to commit to a weekly time period and there may be things you can do even though you live out of town. Click here for more information.
Limited number of RAMS spirit t-shirts available. First come, first serve. Click here for the order form.
March of the Living
In the spring of every other year, our 11th and 12th grade students are able to participate in the March of the Living, an international educational program that brings Jewish teens from all over the world to Poland on Yom HaShoah and then to Israel for Yom Ha'atzmaut. Planning has already begun for this trip, with an introductory meeting to be held on Monday, October 26 at 7:00 pm in the Jewish Community Campus Board Room. For more information, contact Amy Rosenfeld at 913-327-8145. A deposit to reserve your child's spot is due November 15.
