Dear ,

HBHA will receive $2 million in matching funds as a result of our successful $1 million fundraising campaign. The $2 million will be granted by a committee of the Jewish Heritage Foundation, the Menorah Legacy Foundation and the Sosland Foundation. We are most grateful to these foundations as well as to the individuals who have made donations in support of HBHA's Endowment.
Shabbat Shalom,
Howard Haas

Making a Difference
By Sarah S.-Grade 5
When I got in the car on January 17th, I had no idea where I was going. I still didn’t know what was going on until it was explained to me. I was supposed to sort food into bins and flatten cardboard boxes for the food came in at Harvesters. On that Sunday, 73 HBHA students, faculty members and family members gathered to pack food for the hungry. At first, I just wanted to get the job done. Soon, it sunk in that what I was doing was going to help a lot of people. I was still trying to work fast after that, but for a very different reason. I was trying to help more people. It felt amazing to help out.
In the end all of us together sorted 20,000 pounds of food for the hungry. The receiving room where we did our job was huge. It was the length of a football field. The Harvesters building wasn’t as large as it was when they first got it. They ended up adding 40,000 square feet. Harvesters feeds 50,000 people in our region every day. If they just stopped work today they have enough stock to continue for about 30 days.
Harvesters was founded in Kansas City over 30 years ago. They have about 87 full time employees. They have about 3,400 volunteer employees each month. Believe it or not in 2008, Harvesters was in risk of going bankrupt.
All the food that comes in has to be sorted and weighed. After it is weighted, everything is packed into smaller packages and shrink-wrapped. Most orders are made online and ordered items are non-perishable. Harvesters is also green. Cardboard is reused by donors and they recycle all the materials they can. All the food is moving through constantly. What is there at 6:30 in the morning may not be there at 9:30.
Harvesters gets 45% of donations from local donators. Only 2% of food they get is bought. 8% comes from food drives. Over half (59%) of the food they send out goes to food pantries. Only 2% of food goes to homeless people. That may not seem like a lot, but believe me it is.
So, if you want to make a difference, volunteer at Harvesters. HBHA hopes to start having this event yearly. You are welcome to join us. It may not seem important to some people, but to the people you’re helping it means everything.
Spring Conferences
Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences are right around the corner. Students will be out of school on Monday, March 15, in order to free teachers up to meet with parents. Spring conferences are held only by request of parents or the teachers. If your child’s teacher would like to meet with you regarding your child’s progress, you will be notified to secure a time. Should the teacher not request a conference, but you would like to have one, you will have the option to schedule one on that day. Notification regarding conferences will be sent in mid-February.

HBHA Students Get a Break from Regular Classes
Josie T./The Academy Voice
Middle and Upper School students at the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy came back from winter break to enjoy a variety of "elective" classes during Winterims. Winterims, an HBHA tradition, is a week of arts and activities classes that provide students a break from their regular academic schedule. There were forty Winterim courses offered this year and students were able to enroll in up to eight of them.
Winterim classes included…

Kindergarten Mitzvah Project- Help One Another
H & R Block is donating $25 to HBHA for each tax return they complete if we give them the coupon code . It’s a great way for us to make some money for our school for something many of us are doing anyway. If you know anyone that uses H & R Block, please forward to them as well. This is being honored nationwide and could earn a great deal of money for our school.
