Jewish Studies
Judaism at HBHA is not an extracurricular — it is the foundation of daily life.
Students live the Jewish calendar, celebrate holidays together, and engage deeply with Jewish values rooted in Torah. Our dual-language curriculum integrates rigorous Jewish and general studies, emphasizing curiosity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. Students develop a meaningful connection to their Jewish identity while gaining the academic skills and confidence they need to thrive in school and beyond.
Customizable Jewish Studies Program
Our unique, customizable Jewish Studies program enables all students to engage in Jewish learning that respects how Judaism is practiced in a variety of homes, and creates an inclusive environment in which all students are exposed to and respectful of various streams of Jewish practice.
HBHA is one of only a few Jewish community day schools in the world to offer a flexible Jewish Studies model within one school. Launched in 2008, this program is now a proven success and has received notice and accolades from Jewish day schools nationally and internationally.
Our two Jewish Studies options are thoughtfully named Oren and Erez. Both are Hebrew terms referring to trees, one of the oldest metaphors for the Torah. The tree-to-Torah connection comes from Proverbs 3:18, which states: “עֵץ־חַיִּ֣ים הִ֭יא לַמַּחֲזִיקִ֣ים בָּ֑הּ” / “Etz chayim hee l’machazikim bah” / “[The Torah] is a tree of life to those who hold cling to it.” Our program names embody the deep roots in Torah and tradition that our students will gain throughout their time at HBHA, the confidence in one’s identity that comes from a strong Jewish education, and the vibrancy that accompanies a joyful Jewish life.
While all Jewish Studies courses will follow a similar arc of topic and content, Oren courses focus more on traditional interpretations of Jewish law, while Erez courses take a more pluralistic approach to observance. Core Jewish Studies courses are set from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Beginning in seventh grade, students also choose Jewish Studies electives to personalize their Jewish education in a way that best fits their theological and ritual orientation. Our dedicated faculty ensures that every student's individual needs are met, allowing them to connect deeply with their Jewish heritage in inspiring and empowering ways.
Erez Option
The Erez Jewish studies and Hebrew program reflects the diversity of the community we serve. It has equal elements of Jewish culture and Hebrew with a flavor of Israel and Jewish practice. The program is sensitive to the diverse practices of the Jewish community. As such, its ambition is to reflect and respect the diverse population of Jewish Kansas City. Hebrew language and Jewish customs are given equal weight; Jewish customs are presented to inform the student of the beauty and practical application of Jewish tradition.
At its essence, students are exposed to the wonderful traditions of prayer and practice at school while also gaining some exposure to Jewish law. The overarching goal of Erez is to be inclusive in its approach and rich in its presentation.

Oren Option
The Oren program was created for families who specifically desire a Day School education that is taught according to Orthodox norms. Although open to anyone, traditional Jewish practice is assumed, with the expectation that this mode of education more closely reflects the observances practiced in the student’s own home. Oren teachers are all observant, according to the standards of Orthodox practice.
As the grades advance, the curriculum also incorporates additional content and skills-based instruction in traditional Jewish texts (Chumash, Mishna). The Oren program comprises separate Jewish Studies and Hebrew classes, as well as Tefilah (prayers).
Learning Together
It is important to note that students in each of the paths receive instruction separately from their peers only during Jewish Studies. All students participate in all communal celebrations, trips, specials, recess, and lunch together with their grade-level peers.

Statement on Israel
At HBHA, we recognize and affirm that the creation of the State of Israel is one of the seminal events in Jewish history. As a diverse educational institution, we honor a broad spectrum of perspectives and experiences regarding Israel, while upholding Israel's right to exist and thrive as a secure, democratic Jewish state.
Rooted in a foundation of love for Israel, we aim to instill in our students a deep connection to the State of Israel and its people, alongside a sense of responsibility for their welfare. Building from that foundation of love, we believe that engaging in difficult conversations is essential and should happen in an age-appropriate manner. As our students develop more complex and critical thinking skills, we strive to provide them with a nuanced understanding of Israel.
Driven by our mission, this approach will prepare them to navigate the world with a well-rounded perspective, grounded in the values of Torah and independent ethical thinking, that will enable them to make a positive impact on the world.
