The Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy is a part of a diverse private school community in Kansas City and throughout its history, HBHA has displayed excellence in both academics and athletics. In the HBHA Athletic Department, we recognize that athletics play a vital role in the physical and emotional development of students. Athletic competition gives students opportunities for leadership and personal growth and our core values guide us in graduating students that excel in the classroom as well as on the field or court. Those core values are

  • Tradition
  • Community
  • Hard work
  • Teamwork

Student-athletes are the face of our school to the broader community as well as to our own. As such, they are expected to work towards consistently exhibiting the behaviors and attitudes of a mensch. We expect our student-athletes to strive to demonstrate these behaviors and attitudes consistently, in the classroom, on the court or field, and towards teammates, coaches, referees, opposing players, and fans. Our student-athletes should

  • exhibit honesty and integrity
  • show respect for others during learning
  • help those who have been hurt or mistreated
  • strive to navigate difficult peer interactions appropriately
  • demonstrate recognition of the needs and beliefs of others
  • demonstrate kindness and courtesy in interactions with others
  • serve as a positive role model for peers and younger students
  • actively look for ways to improve the lives of others in our community

Middle School Athletics
Middle School athletics is open to all HBHA students in grades 5-8. Our Middle School teams play in the Metropolitan Private School League, which consists of private schools from around the Kansas City metro area.

Upper School Athletics
At the Upper School level, our teams compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Games are scheduled with teams in the league as well as with other public and private school teams in the Kansas City metro area. Upper School teams are often also given the opportunity to compete in regional tournament play with the Kansas Approved School Championships and in travel tournaments hosted by Jewish schools in cities that include Miami, Memphis, and New York.
